How Do I Qualify For A Super Visa?

Canada is a mosaic – made up of people from around the world. People move here for various reasons and sometimes adjusting to a new country and culture can be challenging. They say there’s no place like home and when you’re living away, you might want to bring “home” to you.

A super visa allows parents or grandparents of Canadian residents or permanent residents to visit for up to 2 years. This government-issued document reunites families and is valid for 10 years. There are a few requirements that must be met in order to obtain a super visa.

There are two parties that need to work together to obtain a super visa – the person living in Canada and the person or people planning to visit. The application must be made from outside Canada but many of the requirements are dependent on the person living in Canada.

Fortunately, we can help you sort out the details. We have the experience you need to navigate this process and will share some of the essentials in this post.

Basic Requirements

  • To be eligible for a super visa, you must be a parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada.
  • Your child/grandchild must provide a signed letter inviting you to Canada. That letter needs to promise to support you financially for the duration of your stay and list the number of people in the household. A copy of citizenship or residency needs to be attached to this letter.
  • Proof of medical insurance must also be provided*.

* details on insurance are provided below.

Financial Support

To successfully obtain a super visa, your child/grandchild must provide proof that their household income meets the minimum requirement. This ensures the Canadian government that visitors will be supported while they are here. Citizens/residents may use documents such as a notice of assessment or T4 from the most recent tax year, employment insurance stubs, bank statements, pay stubs or a letter from the employer stating hire date and salary.

Health Insurance

In addition to proof of financial support, the application requires proof of health insurance from a Canadian company. This policy must be valid for at least one year from the date of entry and provide $100,000 coverage. The Canadian government will require proof that the policy has been paid and is not simply a quote.

We suggest a policy that covers

  • X-rays and diagnostic services
  • Hospital care
  • Emergency dental care
  • Prescription medication
  • Travel assistance
  • Ambulance services
  • Hospitalization and follow up care
